Hearty and inspired vegetarian fare at Bonnington Café in Vauxhall

Tucked inside a leafy grove, away from all the bustle of Vauxhall, I recently discovered the fantastic Bonnington Café – a ramshackle, co-operatively run restaurant serving up hearty, inspired vegetarian and vegan food.

Here, a rotating roster of chefs offer up a variety of dishes from around the world. Depending on the cook, I could be tucking into Thai rolls stuffed with beansprouts and courgette, or ploughing through a spinach, cashew and wild mushroom pie. The small menu is a real purse pleaser with dishes costing between £3 and £8.

Around fifteen tables are squeezed inside the charming room, with works by local artists decorating the shabby walls. The atmosphere is informal, intimate and cheery. I love how I can chat to the chef (and find out how he made his orange and almond tart) while I’m waiting on my food – for me it makes the restaurant all the more welcoming.

There’s a bring-your-own bottle policy, and with a tiny shop across the road selling local and organic produce, we easily picked up a decent bottle with which to wash down our dinner.
